The Town and the Region

Caen was William the Conqueror’s favorite place to live.

Situated at 14 km from the coast Caen is the place to see on the way to Cotentin and the Côte de Nacre.

The town which was rebuild after the Second World War will surprise the visitor. The city center is composed of 2 large and parallele avenues ending at the Castle. You can find on the side of those 2 avenues (Avenue du 8 juin and Rue Saint Jean) the Harbor (le Bassin Saint Pierre) and a vast meadow in the heart of the city, two elements which shake and change the town’s modern look.

The town

Caen is to be discovered little by little. You can linger on the architecture called rebuilding architecture even if just to take in the bas-relief depicting the daily life of the citizens of Caen toping off the doors in the Place de la Résistance. From 1946 to 1963 four or five storeys’s buildings have drawn the new and rectilinear landscape of the city. They are the result of a town planning project from the architect Marc Brilland de Laujardière.

You can find a glimpse of the old Caen int he city centre and its pedestrian streets (Rue Froide, Rue Saint Pierre, Maison des Quatrans, Rue Caponnière, Place Saint Sauveur and Saint Pierre’s Church).

D-Day Beaches

D-Day Beaches extend on 80 kilometers of the Norman Coast and they are situated at a few kilometers from the The Originals City Otelinn***.
On June, 6th 1944, 150 000 men landed in Normandy to free Europe. The front is 80 kilometers long and includes coasts from the Calvados and from the Manche.
Postponed because of the bad weather the Overlord operation started on the night between the 5th and the 6th of June 1944 by the airdrop of British and American parachutists a little bit after midnight on the East and the West of the front.

Memorial de Caen

How is peace built after war ? That is the question that the Memorial de Caen tries to answer through its exhibition dedicated to the History of the 20th century from the Second World War and the rebuilding to the the Cold War including geopolitical issues and the building of peace. This unparalleled visit gives priority to emotion and interactivity (through games and demonstration). This new approach of History extends the thought on the 21st Century. From the Second World War to the fall of th Berlin Wall, the Memorial de Caen is the first museum dedicated to the 20th Century and it is at a walking distance from the The Originals City Otelinn***. Hill to the birds

You will find the Colline aux Oiseaux at 3 kilometers from The Originals City Otelinn***. Caen is worth visiting for its parks such as the Jardin des Plantes which is the property of the University of Caen since its creation or such as the Colline aux Oiseaux which counts more than 6.000 vegetale species.
The Jardin des Plantes was conceived by a medecine professor to teach and was then expanded into several glasshouses.
Caen can take pride in knowing that it was the place where the first orchids were grown (Jardin Conservatoire des Plantes de Normandie).

There is a vast itineray of more than 3.000 kilometers of path making it possible for everyone to discover easily the sea and the rivers (blue space), meadows and forests (green space), the men and women, the customs, the heritage and the historical venues of the region along trails and path.

Horse riding

Normandy is well-known for its horse breeding tradition with numerous stud farms such as the Haras du Pin and Haras de St-Lô. There are also a lot of international horse shows and important horse races in Deauville, Caen, Lisieux, Rouen, Craignes, Alençon, Argentan, Flers and at the Haras du Pin.

Golf

The amusement park welcomes you in a verdant space with flowers and mixes culture and leisure time on the theme of Normandy.

The Jurques Zoo
